What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small piece of data sent by a website’s server to your computer or mobile device and stored in your internet browser.  When you visit the same website again, the browser sends cookies back to the website’s server allowing the website to recognise you and remember things like personalised details or preferences.

Cookies are intended to improve your user experience by making it easier and faster to navigate through a website.

More information about the nature and use of cookies can be found at the website: www.allaboutcookies.org.

All of the information a cookie collects can only be retrieved by the website server that sent the cookie to your browser.

Use of cookies is governed by EC (Electronic Communications Networks and Services) (Privacy and Electronic Communications) Regulations 2011 (S.I. 336 of 2011) in Ireland and by the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 as amended by the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 2011 in the UK.

The Single Electricity Market Operator’s Cookie Policy

The Single Electricity Market Operator (“SEMO”) uses cookies to help enhance your user experience when using SEMO’s website www.sem-o.com.

By using this website, you consent to the use of cookies in accordance with SEMO’s Cookie Policy.

From time to time, our Cookie Policy may be updated to reflect any changes in technology or data protection legislation.  Any updates or changes that may affect how we use cookies or how you as a user can manage cookies will appear on this page.

Cookies on the SEMO's website www.sem-o.com

SEMO sets the following first party cookies on its website:

1. SEMO sets a first party cookie when the website is first accessed to note that the pop-up banner regarding cookie usage has been presented to the user. This cookie is stored on the user's computer or mobile device and every time a page is accessed, confirmation that this Cookie Policy has already been presented to the user is validated by checking for the cookie. If the cookie is found, the pop-up banner will not appear. This cookie will be valid for 6 months after which time the user will be notified about cookie usage on the website again, by a pop-up banner appearing. Users will also be notified about cookie usage on the website if they access it from a different computer or mobile device.

2. SEMO sets a first party cookie to note user details where a user has subscribed to SEMO’s Dynamic Reporting environment, a web-based information service that requires users to log in using an email address and password. This cookie is a ‘forms-based authentication cookie’ used to maintain the current user login status and it is central to the reporting functionality provided.  SEMO’s Dynamic Reporting environment is available only to users who choose to sign up for access and log in to the service.

3. SEMO sets a first party cookie when a user clicks the contrast link on the footer of the website and switches between contrast and standard viewing modes. This ‘style cookie’ stores the user’s selected preferred contrast setting to display when using the website.

In addition to the above first party cookies, SEMO also uses third party cookies on its website.  SEMO employs services supplied by a third party that sets its own cookies, Google Analytics.

The Google Analytics cookies used are temporary ‘session’ cookies. These cookies allow us to collect statistical information about our visitors, such as whether they have visited the site before, their general location and the pages they view. This information is gathered anonymously – it does not enable us to identify who you are.  SEMO’s website uses cookies provided by Google Analytics to determine the kind of content and services our visitors value most, which in turn helps improve SEMO’s website and content.

SEMO’s website does not set any advertising cookies.

SEMO is a joint venture between EirGrid PLC and SONI Limited
